Bermuda has a new privacy commissioner

IAPP published an article on January 28, 2020, about Bermuda’s first-ever privacy commissioner.

Here’s a summary:

  • Alex White was appointed as Bermuda’s first privacy commissioner in December. In his pitch to become commissioner, he discussed integrating privacy into processes without organizations sacrificing profit or success.
  • He plans to develop a framework of mid-Atlantic privacy that retains the fundamentals of privacy while simultaneously aiding business success.
  • Creating a regulatory environment that encourages businesses to act ethically and incentivizes best practices that fall in line with international standards is a goal he wishes to achieve.
  • White commented that Bermuda offers a unique range of possibilities on this front, as its governmental bodies operate on all those levels simultaneously.
  • Citizen outreach and helping citizens understand their rights under PIPA is a task on White’s agenda which will include advocating for the individual economic opportunities PIPA can provide.
  • White hopes to put Bermuda on the international privacy map as a known and regarded player in the space and recognizes the opportunity in being a global voice.
  • He wants to ensure their standards match international norms to ease compliance requirements on multinational businesses to create a voice representing Bermuda.
